An important ASEAN meeting with bearing on economic integration is taking place in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, Malaysia this weekend.
Starting today (Feb. 28), economic ministers from ASEAN countries will gather in Kota Bahru, capital of the Malaysian state of Kelantan, to advance the plans for the establishment of ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) by the end of this year. Called the ASEAN Economic Ministers’ Retreat, this annual meeting enables the ministers to assess and take stock of the achievements in regional integration against the plan and thereby take action for any outstanding issues. They will be looking at the progress of key deliverables which are critical for the envisioned AEC. The ministers will issue a statement tomorrow to share the highlights of their deliberations.
The choice of Kelantan as the venue for their meeting is in line with ASEAN’s effort to ensure that the regional economic integration benefits the entire region including the lesser developed areas. The retreat will be chaired by one of Kelantan’s most prominent sons – Y.B. Dato’ Sri Mustapa Mohamad, Malaysia’s Minister of International Trade and Industry.
